Gear I Use for Bird, Blog and Product Photos

If anyone is curious, here is a minimal list of gear I use for this publication and my store, so I'd say they are recommended with reasons included. Plus, the items here can be found for $100-$1,000 nowadays.

I've had most of them for years because they add to my work. You'll find my evaluation and review of these soon.

This list to be kept updated.

Cameras

  • Sony a7c (2020) – smallest full-frame interchangeable mirrorless that is able to use DSLR lenses and silent shutter, improved battery life and 24mp image sensor.
  • Nikon D810 (2014) – workhorse at 36MP and great battery life and ergonomics. Not the best in low light, I don't think.
  • Canon 60D (2010) – classic design and Canon colors, MagicLantern custom firmware, infrared conversion-friendly
  • Ricoh GR III (2019) - image quality and portability

Lenses

  • Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD (2014) – while heavy and slow to focus, one for Nikon offers decent image quality and stabilization
  • Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary (2021) - sharpest all around zoom for Sony E
  • Samyang 135mm f/2.0 ED UMC (2015) - standard affordable for astro and manual focus work

Adapters

  • Sony LA-EA4 (2013) - full frame autofocus Sony A to E adapter
